What to Do When the News
is Too Newsy

It doesn’t seem to matter which political party is in power. The news media has a field day. As soon as one reports that a source said the Constitution should be rewritten, another says all immigrants should be deported.

In truth, the Constitution would serve us all much better if only the powers that be would take the time to read it. It’s at the point where I want to send the whole lot of them back to school for a comprehensive course in constitutional law.

Do you feel a headache coming on?

As for the immigrants, did the report tell us which immigrants should be deported? All? All the way back to Jamestown? All the way back to the first nations, who arrived from Tahiti and other Asian and African regions? All the way back to Adam and Eve? In truth, only those who did not take the time and go to the trouble to enter the country legally (as the law applied at the time of entry) should have anything to worry about – and even they should have their day in court before they are shipped out – the Constitution says so.

Man! This headache is starting to pound!

So, how are we supposed to cope with this daily grind of political torture? Do you want to know what the Holy Bible says? Don’t worry that it’s in the New Testament. It’s good common sense, no matter what your religious affiliation might be. Here’s what it says:

Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit . . . (Ephesians 6:11-18, King James Version)*

In short, we should stay close to Our Heavenly Father, who is capable of putting down the principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of the world, and spiritual wickedness in high places. The battle is His to fight, not ours – except, of course, when we go to the poll and use our best judgment in deciding how to cast our ballots. We should pray unceasingly that He will rein in the wicked, who would destroy our beloved homeland, and preserve the nation that He helped the founding fathers to create.

Does that go against separation of church and state? Not if we truly are “one nation under God with liberty and justice for all” (Pledge of Allegiance).
