A Battle Wages on the Bird Feeder

Anonymous / Pixabay

Same song, umpteenth verse. About four squirrels in our back yard are determined to take over the bird feeders, sending the birds flying back into the shrubbery.

First, my husband put the squirrels' preferred seeds (sunflowers) in a tray near the feeders. The squirrels gobbled it down, then went back up to the bird feeders.

Next, my husband changed the kind of seeds he was putting out (safflower). The birds didn't like it, although the squirrels continued to climb up and eat it.

Next, my husband purchased new feeders that were supposed to be inaccessible to the squirrels. The birds didn't like them, while the squirrels figured out how to use them.

I don't know how this is going to turn out, but my advice to my husband was to either feed everyone or no one. I would prefer to feed everyone, but I can't guarantee that he will share my take on it. We'll have to wait and see.
