Life hasn't been easy for retired Navy commander Stephen McKendrick. It would be easy for him to retreat from life, but that isn't his style. He devotes himself to helping others, perhaps especially abused women and children and Native Hawaiians in need of a good education.

Life looked up for him when Jeff entered his life. The 12-year-old, a fan of his adventure stories, needs a home, and Stephen needs a son. Each helps the other to find his way, all with the help of a very personable Border Collie.
